Commercial banks in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital shut down on Wednesday following the wild protests that hit the city 24 hours ago. 

Checks by The Nation at Lalubu street, the Abeokuta Central Business District(CBD), Sapon, Panseke and Ibara areas of the state capital, showed that all the banks were under lock and key while their Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) were also not functioning.

Many of the ATMs were attacked and vandalised by the protesters on Tuesday, forcing some bank staffers to flee through the back exit for safety.

Armed security operatives were also sighted manning the banks, especially First Bank’s branches to secure them as the fiercest attacked by youths protesting the cash and fuel scarcity in the city

mother jailed for hiding baby in car boot

A Frenchwoman who hid her baby in a maggot-filled car boot for 23 months has been sentenced to five years in prison, three of them suspended. Rosa-Maria Da Cruz kept her daughter, Séréna, between the Peugeot 307 and an unused room in her house for two years. She is said to have hidden the pregnancy and birth from her partner and three older children. Now aged 7, Séréna has a disability and autistic traits which experts say were caused by sensory deprivation. The little girl, who does not speak or socialise, has been placed in foster care.
